Blade Belly A question from a customer, about the almost yet not quite tanto point type look on some Relentless Knives. This equals Blade Belly, and it's simply explained by the knife's primary intended use. Back when swords were the worlds weapons, a thousand years of testing and research went into producing an effective tool. Knives and swords that were intended for chopping rather than stabbing, have what is known as a sweet spot. This is were most of the time, the rubber meets the road, and most of the impact is absorbed. This type of implement is not intended for stabbing, but for chopping. On the Relentless models that have it, this spot is located with in that belly area, and the blade is a bit thicker there. Some swords do the same thing in a different configuration, i.e. the saber, or Kurkuri were the entire blade is curved which accomplishes the same task.

	Major Humphrey is on the road again, and out there doing his dutys for the Army He's keeping in touch, and promises more knife reports soon.

Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) in Washington DC is the first stop for many of America's returning wounded service members from Iraq and Afghanistan. Known as "the amputee ward", the orthopedic Ward 57 at WRAMC houses some of the most severely injured patients for weeks or even months. The painful sacrifice of losing one or more limbs is the new battle these service members and their families now fight. Operation Ward 57 was started to have a direct way for individuals and companies to show their support and raise funds for these courageous men and women who have given so much. The program is run through pro-football player Kerry Carter's THINK BIG FOUNDATION, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Tax ID: 20-196-2446, in partnership with Atmosphere Artist Management LLC. This is a grass-roots, volunteer effort. Each person who buys a T-shirt, not only shows their support, but directly contributes to items for the Ward, patients, family members and staff.

Picking the Right Survival Kit to Meet Your Needs

     Dan recently asked me to write a few
articles on the art and science of survival. This is no
easy task, and there are as many “experts” out
there as off the shelf kits and books on the
subject. While I am no all-knowing expert in this
area, I have spent some time “temporarily
misdirected” in the Alaskan bush which helped to solidify
my impressions on choosing the right survival kit
to match your environment. I break down my
personal kits into three categories: the Every Day
Carry (EDC) size, the day hike size, and the larger,
going “out there” size.
     I will admit that one of my hobbies is
packing new mini survival kits. If I come across an
old Altoid can or band-aid tin, I will most likely
start trying to figure out how much stuff I can
cram into the tiny compartments. You can search
the web and find all kinds of lists out there for
the survival basics but all concentrate on fire
starting, signaling, navigation, and cutting. I
personally enjoy the SAS survival handbook for my
basic lists. I like how the book describes
different size kits and how to customize them to your
environment. A great example is to leave your
fishing tackle at the house if you are going to a
desert environment. My EDC kit is packed into a
small Altoid can and is wrapped in athletic tape
to help provide a little moisture resistance. It
is not meant to keep me alive in the deep woods
for a week, but it will give me the necessities
to make a fire and find my direction. The tin is
small enough that I can throw it in a jacket
pocket and forget it is there.
     If I am going on a day hike or a hunting
trip, then I will bring along a slightly larger kit
that will sustain me for a little more time in
the woods, if needed. I really like the Adventure
Medical Kits Pocket Survival Pack (PSP). I did
add some matches and water purification tablets to
the basic kit since I am not worried about
carrying it on an airplane. I highly suggest that
anyone who purchases a ready made kit actually take
it apart and test all the items before heading to
the wilds. This way you will not be trying to
read directions or finding out an item is broken
when you need it the most. For the PSP I went
ahead and bought two kits and proceeded to do a
detailed test of all the components of the PSP to
make sure I knew how everything worked.
     For a longer hike or hunting trip when I am
planning on going way off the beaten path, then I
will carry my largest survival kit which is
carried in an old waist pack. This kit is modeled
after the larger SAS survival handbook kit and
features a small aluminum canteen cup for cooking,
survival shelter, and pocket flares to name a few
unique items. The thought behind this kit is that
if I am hurt or lost it may take people a few
days to reach me and the extra weight of the kit is
justified by the added items. I like storing
this kit in the waist pack so it can be carried by
itself if I decide to drop my backpack for some
reason.
     Of course no kit is complete without a good
knife. My pocketknife is always with me for EDC
and is a good compliment to my small kit. For my
middle size kit I will normally pair it with a
small fixed blade knife like a Relentless Stinger
or Backpacker. A small knife with a three to
four inch blade size will handle just about any task
encountered on a day hike or similar trip. For
a more “extreme” hike or adventure, I pair my
large kit with a longer fixed blade knife in the
five to seven inch blade range. The idea behind
this pair would be the larger knife may be used to
construct shelter, clear paths, be used as a
weapon against wildlife (last resort!), etc. I also
have a folding knife inside the large kit for
backup in case I loose the large knife.
     To say that building a survival kit is more
art than science would be hard to argue. While
there is an endless wealth of information readily
available to build or purchase the “perfect” kit,
what it really boils down to is personal
preference and matching the right size kit to your
situation. No kit will cover every environment and
you also need to check the condition of the
components in any store bought kit. If you build your
own kit, make sure you start off with a standard
list of items and then fine tune it to match your
current conditions. You also need to know when
to stop adding “nice to have” items in your kit to
prevent it from weighing too much, or taking up
too much space in your pack or pocket. The right
size kit will ensure that you always have it
with you in the event that you actually have to use
its contents to survive a little “temporary
misdirection” in the wilds.

To Kill an American
You probably missed it in the rush of news last week, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.
So I just thought I would write to let them know what an American is, so they would know when they found one.
An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani or Afghan.
An American may also be a Comanche, Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as Native Americans.
An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan . The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses.
An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.
An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence , which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness.
An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return.
When Afghanistan was over-run by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country! As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan.
Americans welcome the best of everything...the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best services.
But they also welcome the least.
The national symbol of America , The Statue of Liberty , welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America .
Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, 2001 earning a better life for their families. It's been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 different countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists.
So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and other blood-thirsty tyrants in the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom
